Jim Thome Thanks Charlie Manuel

Thome celebrates becoming only the eighth player in MLB history to hit at least 600 home runs. (US Presswire)

US Presswire

Last night, Jim Thome became just the 8th player in Major League baseball to reach the 600 home run milestone. What makes it even better is that 3 of the last 4 players to do it in this era were all linked to (or admitted to) steroid use which, in my opinion, means they should come off the list. If you go by that data, Thome is just the 5th player to do it.

I have never officially met Thome but I can tell that he’s one hell of a guy. He spent a few seasons in Philly and is still a fan favorite. Read the rest of this entry »

Pence Fitting In Nicely

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - AUGUST 06: Hunter Pence #3 of the Philadelphia Phillies singles in the seventh inning against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on August 6, 2011 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)So this morning I got to work, took care of my usual start of the day tasks and then opened up Philly.com to do some reading for a PhillySportsChat post today.  I clicked on the sports tab and I found an article talking about Hunter Pence.  The title read Hunter Pence is Philly Style.

After reading the article I now like Hunter Pence even more.  It discussed how Pence is the type of ball player that just has a knack for the game and plays  Read the rest of this entry »

Teams Will Be Doing Some Eagle Hunting this Season

Andy Reid and the charismatic Vick both prove to be Philly selling points. (AP)The “Eagle Green” this season will see a shift to a bright glowing red that will attract (and already has attracted) hate, disgust, and undoubtedly a new passion for beating the Eagles.  Without question, the Eagles have had an off season, or should I say two weeks, as explosive as their very own DeSean Jackson.  Move after move after move the Eagles have added real legitimate talent.  From Cromartie to Asomugha to Ronnie Brown the list is just ridiculous.  Babin, maybe the least flashy Read the rest of this entry »

DRC!!!

It is now the day after the big trade and Eagles fans have had time to let the move sink in… so time to evaluate.

The Eagles traded Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie and a 2nd round pick.

The Eagles gave up a player who lost value to the team once Michael Vick stepped up and proved to be arguably a top five quarterback in the league.  Kolb has shown flashes of talent but he has also had more than his share of bad plays.  He has a Read the rest of this entry »

Beltran Worth It?

Carlos Beltran of the New York Mets.Everyone is waiting for the Ruben to start movin’… but will he?  The rumors are saying that the Phillies have interest in acquiring the New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran.  True or not no one can say for sure.  However this brings up a few questions, mainly… who would the Phillies have to give up?

So before we take a look at Beltran’s statistics lets see who the Phillies would have to give up to get him.

Dom Brown, Vance Worley, Bastardo, Mayberry Jr., Francisco, and maybe Kendrick are all possibilities.  I’m sure the Phillies have a few prospects that the Mets would be interested in as well.  However I would hate to see them diminish their system for a player who might only play a few months for the team…but being World Series Champs would be worth it.  I would really hate to see Brown, Vance, or Bastardo leave.  That leaves Read the rest of this entry »

Bochy Tries to Drain Phillies Starters

Last night was the 2011 MLB All-Star Game. Halladay was honored as the starting pitcher for the NL which was fantastic and Cliff Lee was able to see action as well thanks to his great season.

However, when you take a closer look at the box score, you will notice that nobody in the entire game pitched more innings than Halladay (2.0) or threw more pitches than Lee (25). They both pitched around 2 innings and the press conferences made it seem like Cliff Lee would have went out for a third inning if he hadn’t given up a few hits. They were pretty much used

On the flip side, besides Wilson, no Giants pitchers made it into the game. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Sure Manager Bruce Bochy told the press that he felt that the other pitchers were more deserving of playing than his own guys but it’s obvious that he just wanted to rest his starters for the second half of the season and the playoffs and not have them waste any energy on the mound. When the Lockout Ends…

With the latest talk saying that the NFL lockout is getting closer and closer to its demise it is time to really start asking ourselves…”What will the Eagles do?”  We all know that Lurie won’t shy away from the big move.  So, here are three BIG moves that the Eagles may possibly make:

3. Kevin Kolb gets traded- This seems like an obvious move.  Everyone has been talking about it and it probably would have been done already if the lockout never happened.  It is very clear Read the rest of this entry »

Who Will be Key?

So after last nights game verses the Boston Red Sox I got to thinking... besides the Phillies bats remaining consistent and not disappearing for ten games at a time who is singly the most KEY player for the Phillies to bring back the title of  "World Series Champions"?

I narrowed it down to 3 players in my very own opinion.  Check it out...

  1. Jimmy Rollins- Why? Well because when Jimmy is playing well the Phillies are playing well.  This doesn't mean that when Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday was a Crazy One

So yesterday was a wild day in the world of sports.  Oswalt and the Phillies get embarrassed at home, the Sixers might get sold, the Sixers might acquire Monte Ellis, the Flyers acquire rights to goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, Avant says Burress would be a great addition.

So here are some words of wisdom on each of these topics.

The Phillies: The game was certainly tough to watch.  Oswalt was inconsistent and he was missing his spots.  The offense failed to capitalize on many opportunities and at times were too aggressive against a wild pitcher.  The defense committed errors…all of this will lose you ball games.

The Sixers: After a season that showed a lot of promise now is the time for the Sixers.  Ed Snider lacks enough passion for the Sixers for them to be as successful as other organizations.  Doug Collins has the team Read the rest of this entry »
