The Sixers Show Signs of Life

AP Photo

The Sixers are getting hot right before the All-Star break which might throw some kinks into any trades they were thinking about doing. At 19-31, they still aren’t great but their 4 game winning streak is proof this team still has some fight left in it.

Besides a win against the Nets, the other 3 teams they beat in this short winning streak all have much better records than them. They’ve also been putting up a lot of points during the winning streak Read the rest of this entry »

The Suns want Iggy

Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire smiles as he runs back on defense after hitting a basket against the Denver Nuggets in the first quarter of an NBA basketball game in Denver on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010.How would you like Amare Stoudemire in a Sixers jersey for the rest of the season? The Sixers don’t seem to like the idea.

It’s no secret that the Sixers’ are trying to make a move before the trade deadline and they’re shopping around Andre Iguodala. There are new rumors almost everyday and, as fans, we don’t know who’ll be going where or if any move will be made at all.

One possible trade that is getting attention is with the Suns. According to various reports from places such as ESPN and CSN Philly, the Suns have made it clear that they would love to have Iggy in Phoenix. The reported deal that interests them would be one that sends Iguodala and Dalembert to the Suns for a package of players including Amare Stoudemire. But the one thing stopping this from happening is Philly- they don’t want to make the move.

Dawkins Says Run the Ball

Former Eagle Brian Dawkins, one of the most beloved players in all of Philadelphia sports history gave the Eagles a little advice last Sunday during the Pro Bowl.  Thanks for speaking up Brian.  Only if the coaching staff would listen.

“Run the ball. With that passing attack, the way that thing is shaping up to be, go ahead and bring Donovan [McNabb] back to where he’s supposed to be, and run Read the rest of this entry »

Temple Alum In His 2nd Super Bowl

AP Photo/Darron Cummings

AP Photo/Darron Cummings

Although Temple football hasn’t produced a lot of wins over the past decade, they have produced a lot of Super Bowl caliber football players. This Sunday, Raheem Brock (DE- Colts) will be playing in his second Super Bowl since being drafted from Temple in 2002.

Brock is in his 8th season in the NFL and has made a name for himself around the league. He’s recorded 28.5 sacks and played in all 16 games for the Colts in 6 of the past 7 seasons. His versatility and reliability make him an important part of the Indianapolis Defense. He was originally drafted by the Eagles but had to be released because the team ran out of money. The Colts were quick to pick him up and haven’t regretted the move.

The big story line surrounding Brock this Sunday is his playing time. He plays in every game for the team but will probably see even more playing time in the Super Bowl Read the rest of this entry »

Vick a top 10 QB

Michael Vick was on the Dan Patrick Radio Show recently and here is what he said, “”I still feel like I’m among the top 10, to be honest.”  He stated that he is confident in his abilities.  Now, here is my opinion on Michael Vick.

Michael Vick is an athlete.  He is fast, but not as fast as he used to be.  He is quick, but not as quick as he used to be.  His passing ability is unknown since he really didn’t throw the ball that much this season.  He was 6-13 for a total of 86 yards and one touchdown.  He ran the ball 24 times racking up 96 yards, an average Read the rest of this entry »

The Sixers’ Huge Coaching Problem

http://swamigp.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/jordan_400_080410.jpgThere are plenty of reasons the Sixers haven’t won anything since 2001. But the major problem they have selecting head coaches may be the biggest reason of all.

In the NBA, coaching consistency plays as big a role in building a championship team as the players do. Since the 1989 season, 19 of the 21 NBA championships were won by 5 teams (Pistons, Bulls, Lakers, Rockets, Spurs). Besides talented players, all of those teams had head coaches that can consistently lead their teams to championships. Many of the coaches started in the building phases of the team and led them to greatness multiple times during their tenures.

That’s clearly missing from the Sixers. Since 1979, only 2 of their head coaches have lasted 5 years or more. 1 was Billy Cunningham who brought a championship to Philadelphia in 1983 and the other was Larry Brown who led the Sixers to the NBA Finals in 2001. Read the rest of this entry »

Jackson… “Shooting For the Top”

DeSean Jackson earned $385,000 this season and next season he is scheduled to make $470,000.  In 2011, he will make $555,000.  Now, he signed the contract and that is what he agreed too.  However, I think that everyone agrees that his salary is a little less than what he deserves.

Let’s break down his stats:

While DeSean only had 62 receptions which was 38th in the league (including RB’s), his 62 receptions tallied up over 1,150 yards.  He averaged over 18 yards a reception which is first among players with more than fifty receptions.  The next player in average yards a reception is the Chargers Vincent Jackson who had 68 catches averaging 17 yards per grab.  Jackson was 9th in the league totaling about 77 yards a game. McNabb to the Vikings? Bad Idea!

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (9), Philadelphia Eagles'quarterback Donovan McNabb (5) and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers talk during NFC NFL football practice at the Pro Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.I can’t seem to get away from the McNabb trade talks. There’s speculation and rumors about him going to a ton of teams and ESPN has non-stop stories about how his future depends on Favre and Warner’s retirement decisions. Today Kurt Warner announced his retirement which many say may open up doors for McNabb to be traded to Arizona where he has a home and spends his offseason training.  The world is still waiting on Favre’s decision (and may waiting be until late August) but if the Eagles trade him to Minnesota as Brett’s replacement, it would be one of the worst moves they could make. Flyers Game Tonight

I will be attending the Flyers game tonight in Philadelphia against the Atlanta Thrashers.  The Thrashers have a very similar record to the Flyers.  While they have three less wins, they have one less loss and five more overtime losses.  When looking at the points, the Flyers have 55 and the Thrashers have 54.  The Flyers are third in the Atlantic Division, and the Thrashers are third in the Southeast.  However, in the Eastern Conference, the Flyers are sixth and the Thrashers are eleventh.  While the teams Read the rest of this entry »

Charlotte Upsets (15) Temple

http://flyernews.com/files/images/26bc6f4f48beb4577cf8bad7e37aedb7.jpgTemple has been hot lately. They were undefeated in conference play. Their only loss since December 1st was to Kansas and they are ranked 15th in the country. That has all changed after their game in Charlotte tonight. They lost to the 49ers 74-64 for one reason- early foul trouble.

Temple has the power to beat almost anyone as they showed with a 10 point win over Villanova (their only loss of the season). But when their best players get into foul trouble and need to sit on the bench for most of the 2nd half, they won’t have a good shot against anybody. Read the rest of this entry »
