The Best of Year 1
So today’s the 1st birthday of Philly Sports Chat. It’s been a fun year and we’ve met some cool people along the way. So much has happened in the world of Philly sports over the past year. Here is my favorite post/moment from every pro team we write about. Click on the name of the post to read it:
Phillies: A Poem For the Spankees (October 28th, 2009)
By the end of October, the Phillies were in the heat of their 2nd World Series in a row. The Yankees, their fans and the New York media had been trashing Philadelphia for days. There were even some places dissing Harry Kalas. It made our hatred for the Yankees grow to a whole new level and it inspired Matt to throw together this epic rap dissing them. Read it!
Eagles: Do You Love DeSean As Much As He Loves Himself (video)? (November 17th, 2009)
This post stood out to me even through all the other big moments that happened to the Birds the past year (like signing Vick). The video clip included in the post never get’s old. It’s a clip that first aired on ESPN in November. It’s basically 2 minutes of DeSean Jackson explaining to the world why he’s the man and why he can’t be stopped. Check it out if you missed it.
Sixers: Tonight’s the Night and It Was Fun While It Lasted (December 2009 - March 2010)
The biggest thing to happen to the Sixers in the existance of this blog was the coming and going of Allen Iverson. In December, we welcomed him to Philly with a post on the day of his first game and in March we said goodbye after 25 games. It was very exciting while it lasted and basically the only time the Sixers made serious news in the past year.
Flyers: From Underachievers to Overacheivers: Great Run Flyers (June 10th, 2010)
This post was a recap of the greatest Flyers season in quite some time which is why it gets the nod as favorite Flyers post of the season. There were posts that were more entertaining but we couldn’t leave out a post about the Flyers coming 2 wins shy of being Stanley Cup Champions. One post that came close for me was this post full of inspirational Flyers videos that we put together right before game 6.
That’s a look back at the last year in Philly sports. Thanks for all your support over the past year. It’s been fun. Also, don’t forget to contact us if you have any comments or reccomendations at phillysportschat@yahoo.com
The Sixers Can Only Watch
As an NBA fan, I’ve been waiting for this Summer for years. We all know the huge names that are floating around in free agency- Lebron, Wade, Pierce, Bosh, Joe Johnson, Amare Stoudemire, Nowitzki, Boozer, Ray Allen, David Lee, etc.
It’s a shame the Sixers are in position to land NOBODY. They’ve made pretty good moves this offseason but they just don’t have the capability to entice even one of these players.
I’ve accepted this fact years ago when we realized all the horrible management moves would hold up their cap space until at least 2011. What makes it bad though is that the only teams in the mix right now are in the Eastern Conference (except for the Clippers but do you really think anyone will go there?).
The Sixers seem to be on the up but and look to have a promising future within the next few seasons but what happens with this free agency could decide whether they’ll ever make it to the finals or not. Read the rest of this entry »
Sorting Through the Sammy Trade
After years of speculation, the Sixers front office finally pulled off a move sending Samuel Dalembert packing. The deal sends him to the Kings in exchange for the overpaid Andres Nocioni and young big man Spencer Hawes. Many fans are relieved that the Sixers have departed from the Dalembert era but the trade leaves a lot to sort through and many questions left unanswered. Including what the Sixers do with the second overall pick next week.
First of all, we should sort through the players and contracts the Sixers traded for. Nocioni’s contract is much larger than he deserves. He was good with the Bulls but had a sub par 2009 in his first full year with the Kings. He came off the bench on one of the league’s worst teams and only averaged 8.5ppg. Sixers Next Coach Should Be ____.
Here’s another fill in the blank. There are a ton of qualified coaches out there for the Sixers. Finish the sentence:
The Sixers next head coach should be ____.
The Sixers have been through this process way too often over the past 6 seasons (for more evidence click here). Every year they pick a new coach. Some exciting, big names get thrown around and the fans hope they make the right choice. Instead, the team ends up picking the lesser known or unproven option and have to do it all over in a year or 2.
This year, there are some really big names out there as well as a few up-and-coming assistant coaches. Larry Brown, Doug Collins, Avery Johnson are all proven, winning coaches Read the rest of this entry »
Phillies Are The City’s Only Hope

AP Photo
The Eagles failed on us this year. We had high hopes for them going into the last week of the regular season and the playoffs but they completely fell apart and let us down. Now they’re sitting low in free agency and they don’t get another shot at the playoffs for about 10 months.
The Sixers seem to fail on us every year. They haven’t been out of the first round of the playoffs in 7 years and have had 6 different head coaches since 2003. This year they’re among the leagues worst Read the rest of this entry »
Dalembert Playing With Heart
Early this week, Dalembert spent a few days in Haiti doing everything he could to give back and help. Read the rest of this entry »
Starting For the Eastern Conference All Stars…. ALLEN IVERSON?

It’s not official yet but as of right now, Allen Iverson is in line to be the starting guard for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star game. Yes- the Iverson who has played only 13 games this year and is averaging about 15 points per outing. The third returns were announced a few days ago and Iverson is leading Vince Carter by 155,000 votes. Voting doesn’t end until January 18th but it seems like his lead may be out of reach.
Even though he isn’t the Iverson of old (only scoring 4 points on 6 shots in his last outing) people still love him all around the world and that’s showing in the polls. He is a fan favorite wherever he goes and to people inside and out of Philly, he’s a living legend.
Him getting the starting guard spot isn’t all that unbelievable either if you think about it. Besides Wade-who is the other starting guard and ahead of AI in the voting- what other Eastern guards deserve it? Vince Carter is closest to Iverson but he’s not having the greatest of years either. Iverson Out Against Celtics

Allen Iverson’s return to Philly was an event that had the NBA and the whole sports industry buzzing. He played a handful of games and is averaging just over 14 points per game. He is dishing out 4 assists and grabbing about 3 rebounds a game. I would say that he is contributing nicely. He obviously isn’t the 30 points a night Iverson anymore.
One of Iverson’s characteristics that makes him a fan favorite in Philadelphia is his toughness. He played through various injuries and made it look like he was perfectly fine for so many years.
However, against the Celtics Iverson will be sitting out. Why? Arthritis. Allen Iverson has arthritis in his left knee and also a right shoulder contusion. The important thing is for the Sixers to handle it correctly and not rush into putting him back in Read the rest of this entry »
Somebody Get This Team A Bench!
The Sixers have a bunch of problems, some controllable (not finishing games) and some not (injuries to team leaders), but one key problem that will continue to hold them back all year is their lack of a solid bench. While injuries to players like Marreese Speights are part of the reason, it goes much deeper then that.
For the most part, they have a solid starting lineup. They tend to start games off hot and its not rare to see them take a lead into the 3rd or 4th quarters. But the starters can’t play the entire game and when they get tired and need a break, there’s nobody to fill in for them.
They have no depth and their record shows it.In their last 3 games (which happen to all be losses) here’s how their total bench points compare to their opponent’s total bench points:
Rockets: 46 points Sixers: 6 points
Pistons: 26 points Sixers: 12 points
Nuggets: 29 points Sixers: 2 points
Sixers Will Win __ Games This Year
The Sixers top management (Stefanski, DiLeo, Jordan and even Aaron McKie) have officially met with Allen Iverson in Dallas to talk about a possible comeback. As of now, nothing is official and this team seems to be in shambles. They lost 8 of their last 9 and have a record of 5-12. The only thing keeping them out of last place in the division are the horrible Knicks and Nets- but the Knicks are catching up to them with 3 wins.
Today’s “Fill it in” question is how many games do you think the Sixers will win this season WITH THE ROSTER THEY HAVE RIGHT NOW? Don’t take into account the thought of them signing Iverson or going after other free agents or trades. This question is in regards to their current roster. If they kept this team in tact all season, what would their final record be?
Our Opinion: 32. With the team they have now, they will finish with a 32-50 record and miss the playoffs. If you think this is too many wins to predict, here’s the reasoning: Read the rest of this entry »
