From Underachievers to Overachievers: Great Run Flyers

Philadelphia Flyers' Jeff Carter celebrates his second-period goal against the Montreal Canadiens. The Flyers reach the Stanley Cup finals with a 4-2 win, their first trip to the finals since 1997.

Last night ended far too abruptly.  After the Flyers scored the tying goal in the 3rd period, I thought for sure their Cinderella playoff run would continue to game 7. But the Blackhawks, who outshot the Flyers all night, had other plans and in a fluke shot the Stanley Cup was theirs.

All I can say about the Flyers season is WOW! Read the rest of this entry »

Flyers Game 3 Preview

Former Oilers assistant coach Craig Simpson describes Chris Pronger as "such a strong personality" and "the elephant in the room a lot of the times, but on a good team with confident guys around him, I think it's a component you can handle."

Game 2 was frustrating. The Flyers played hard but couldn’t overcome a short, 2nd period burst by the Blackhawks where they scored 2 goals in less than 30 seconds.

They also couldn’t get ANYTHING past Niemi. In the 3rd period, the Flyers outshot Chicago 15-4 but only managed to score just 1 goal. Read the rest of this entry »

The Answer is Defense

Brian BoucherThe Flyers have an explosive offense and they can score five goals a night if they play to their full potential all the time.  There is no question that this team can put points on the board.  The key to the team making it past the Devils and continuing to make a push for the Cup is their defense.

Both of these teams are extremely familiar with each other and know the strengths and weaknesses of their opposition.  Kimmo, Pronger, and Coburn really need to elevate their game play.  The defensive squad played extremely well against the Devils in game one and that is what they need to continue to do.  With the Read the rest of this entry »

We Fly High… In the Offseason

The Flyers last season lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins who went on to eventually win the Stanley Cup. The previous year, the Flyers also lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. If the Flyers would happen to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in the playoffs this upcoming season and happen to lose to them, it would be the ultimate slap in the face. There is no arguing the strength and depth of the Flyers offense. They have three high powered lines that score at will. However this offseason, the Flyers went out and got two very key additions.

Defenseman Chris Pronger is a future hall of famer, but as of now, he is a Philadelphia Flyer. He is a tremendous player who plays at a level that is 5 years younger than his actual age (34). He tallied five more points (48) than Kimmo Timonen who had the most points as a defenseman on the Flyers (43).  48 points put him in the top 15 point scoring defensman in the league.  The other key addition is goaltender Ray Emery. Formerly known as a trouble maker, he took a year off from the NHL to play in Russia. The Flyers are giving him another shot and hope that he can bring the city of Philadelphia Lord Stanley’s Cup just like he did for the Senators.

It is obvious that the Flyers this off season focused on strengthening their defense. Now, they hopefully have a clutch goaltender and a star player on the defensive side of the puck. They also added Brian Boucher who played previously on the Flyers. He will back up Ray. It will be an interesting season once it comes time for the players to step onto the ice.  Here are some rankings according to ESPN.com.  They have the Flyers at fourth in the East.
