Philly’s First Look at Strasburg May Have to Wait

As the schedule was playing out, it looked like the Phillies and their fans were going to get their first look at Stephen Strasburg this Sunday in the closing game of their series with the Nationals. That all changed when he missed his start last night due to inflamation in his shoulder.

I was personally looking forward to the first time the Phillies offense met Strasburg. Read the rest of this entry »

WOW! A 4 Game Winning Streak!

ST. LOUIS - JULY 22: Jayson Werth #28 of the Philadelphia Phillies shows the ball after making a sliding catch against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on July 22, 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri. The Phillies defeated the Cardinals 2-0. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)And with that, the Phillies are only FIVE games out of first place.

As soon as their 4 game losing streak ended, they responded with a 4 game winning streak and an offensive explosion- and it’s not over yet. During the losing streak they averaged 3 runs per game and during the current winning streak they’re averaging nearly 6. Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies Weekend Preview

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki #2 of the Colorado Rockies turns a double play on Chase Utley #26 of the Philadelphia Phillies on a grounder hit by Ryan Howard to Clint Barmes in the sixth inning of MLB action on Opening Day at Coors Field on April 10, 2009 in Denver, Colorado. Neither of these players will be playing this weekend...

The Phillies finally got a win yesterday but it took them 11 innings to score a run. After the game, their hitting coach was fired and they traveled back to Philly to start a new series. We’ll see if the firing of Thompson will light a fire under them or have a negative effect.

Tonight the Phillies play at home for the first time since before the all-star break. They’ll be playing the Rockies who have a better record than the Phils but are in third place in the NL West behind the Padres and Giants. If the Phillies were in the NL West, they’d be in 5th place. This is no easy matchup.

Friday: Roy Halladay(10-8, 2.40) vs Aaron Cook (4-5, 4.65)

Roy Halladay gives the Phillies their best chance to win one this weekend but he hasn’t been pitching well recently. The good news is that it’s a home game. Doc has a 1.87 era in his 11 starts a CBP this year. Read the rest of this entry »

Now This is Just Embarrassing

Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, right, stands on the mound with catcher Carlos Ruiz after Manuel pulled starting pitcher Joe Blanton out of the baseball game during the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in St. Louis. The Phillies are playing like one of the worst teams in baseball and their aren’t any excuses anymore.

The trades they pulled off and signings they made in the off season were supposed to make them even better than last year’s NL Champions. Sure they’ve been battling injuries all season but most of those players are getting healthy and that’s not an excuse for everyone else who’s perfectly fine but playing poorly.

Looking back, some of the moves made by Amaro this offseason look pretty bad. Getting rid of Cliff Lee instead of paying him for one more freakin’ year seems to be a mistake.

I know they wanted to “replenish their farm system” but the players they got in return are nothing special Read the rest of this entry »

The Cubs Aren’t Even That Good

Philadelphia Phillies starter Roy Halladay looks down after Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run home run during the sixth inning of a baseball game Sunday, July 18, 2010, in Chicago.(AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh)Just when we thought things were looking up, we were brought back down again.

Last week, the Phillies went into the All-Star break by sweeping the Reds- one of the best teams in the NL- in a 4 game series. It was the best way they could have wrapped up the first half and it gave us all excitement heading into the stretch run.

We were brought back to reality this weekend after the Phillies dropped 3 of 4 to the lowly Chicago Cubs. Read the rest of this entry »

Ex-Phillies Outshine Current Phillies in the All-Star Game

Rolen and Byrd celebrating.

The All-Star game was exciting and Brian McCann’s huge 7th inning hit helped the National League win it’s first game since 1996.

The win didn’t have that much to do with current Phillies though. Ryan Howard and Roy Halladay were the only to participants from Philly and they didn’t contribute much to the outcome of the game. Read the rest of this entry »

The Best of Year 1

So today’s the 1st birthday of Philly Sports Chat. It’s been a fun year and we’ve met some cool people along the way. So much has happened in the world of Philly sports over the past year. Here is my favorite post/moment from every pro team we write about. Click on the name of the post to read it:

Phillies: A Poem For the Spankees (October 28th, 2009)

By the end of October, the Phillies were in the heat of their 2nd World Series in a row. The Yankees, their fans and the New York media had been trashing Philadelphia for days. There were even some places dissing Harry Kalas. It made our hatred for the Yankees grow to a whole new level and it inspired Matt to throw together this epic rap dissing them. Read it!

Eagles: Do You Love DeSean As Much As He Loves Himself (video)?  (November 17th, 2009)

This post stood out to me even through all the other big moments that happened to the Birds the past year (like signing Vick). The video clip included in the post never get’s old. It’s a clip that first aired on ESPN in November. It’s basically 2 minutes of DeSean Jackson explaining to the world why he’s the man and why he can’t be stopped. Check it out if you missed it.

Sixers: Tonight’s the Night and It Was Fun While It Lasted (December 2009 - March 2010)

The biggest thing to happen to the Sixers in the existance of this blog was the coming and going of Allen Iverson. In December, we welcomed him to Philly with a post on the day of his first game and in March we said goodbye after 25 games. It was very exciting while it lasted and basically the only time the Sixers made serious news in the past year.

Flyers: From Underachievers to Overacheivers: Great Run Flyers  (June 10th, 2010)

This post was a recap of the greatest Flyers season in quite some time which is why it gets the nod as favorite Flyers post of the season. There were posts that were more entertaining but we couldn’t leave out a post about the Flyers coming 2 wins shy of being Stanley Cup Champions. One post that came close for me was this post full of inspirational Flyers videos that we put together right before game 6.

That’s a look back at the last year in Philly sports. Thanks for all your support over the past year. It’s been fun. Also, don’t forget to contact us if you have any comments or reccomendations at phillysportschat@yahoo.com

For the Phillies, it Feels Like 2007

If it feels like 2007 to you too, that’s because that was the last time the Phillies were this far back in the division. With last night’s loss to the Braves, the Phillies fell to 6 games back- the furthest back they’ve been since September 2007. It’s not insurmountable but it’s not something this team is used to.

That stat explains how good they’ve been over the past 3 years but also how bad (and unlucky) they’ve been this season. I would have to say it’s been an even mix of bad luck and poor play.

Chase  Utley, Placido Polanco,  Carlos Ruiz, J.A. Happ, Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin, Antonio Bastardo, Jimmy Rollins, Joe Blanton, Brad Lidge, and Brian Schneider are all big time players that have seen the disabled list at least once this season so far. Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies’ Poor Performance Hurt Potential All Stars

Phillies All-Star Outfield

ahh... the memories (thefightins.com)

Last year at this time the city was buzzing about how many All-Stars the Phillies had. They had 5 All-Stars on the final roster including the entire outfield. Victorino even won a world-wide vote for the final spot on the NL squad. So far this season, things are very different.

The game is still a bit away, which means players may get injured and managers may have to fill spots, but as of now they only have 3 all-stars. Worse yet, Utley is injured so the only starter representing the Phillies can’t play. Read the rest of this entry »
