Is Jeff Carter the Odd Man Out?
That’s what the mainstream media has been hinting at recently.
Nobody truly knows what will happen until it actually goes down but until then, there will be non-stop speculation. One rumor spreading around the league is that the Flyers may be without Jeff Carter next season.
They have a situation in which they have more centers than necessary - especially with Danny Briere excelling in the position during the playoffs. According to Holmgren, having 5 centers is “a good problem to have.”
They also need more money. If the Flyers don’t make a move, they’ll only have just over $9 million to sign a minimum of seven players. Is that even possible? Read the rest of this entry »
If The Flyers Had a Goalie…
If the Flyers had a dominant goalie for the past 10 years, they would have won at least 2 Stanley Cups.
I know that’s a bold statement but just think about it for a minute. They’re known by fans and experts for having a goalie carousel year in and year out. They can never find a steady goalie and haven’t had a superstar in the net in quite some time.
Imagine if they had taken (or signed) a player like Martin Brodeur- a franchise player that they could rely on every season to put them in position to win. Add a goalie like him to the solid roster they put on the ice every year and think how much better they would be. Read the rest of this entry »

Flyers Game 3 Preview

Game 2 was frustrating. The Flyers played hard but couldn’t overcome a short, 2nd period burst by the Blackhawks where they scored 2 goals in less than 30 seconds.
They also couldn’t get ANYTHING past Niemi. In the 3rd period, the Flyers outshot Chicago 15-4 but only managed to score just 1 goal. Read the rest of this entry »
Flyers Must Contain Byfuglien

The Flyers and Blackhawks aren’t too familiar with eachother. They only played once this season in Philadelphia and the Blackhawks weren’t using their current goaltender. The Flyers won that game back on March 13th but it was anything but a blowout. Pronger’s goal with 2.1 seconds left in the third gave them the win.
One player the Flyers will need to familiarize themselves with before Saturday’s game is Dustin Byfuglien. Read the rest of this entry »
Flyers Need to Improve
Today’s game could be a series changer. The Flyers could win and have a commanding 3-1 series lead heading back to Philadelphia, or Montreal could win, taking all the momentum and tying the series up at 2 games a piece.
In game three, the Flyers experienced what the Canadiens went through in games 1 and 2 and it wasn’t pretty. Mike Richard’s statements after Thursday’s game summed it up pretty well:
“I don’t know what it is, but maybe we got a little cocky and a little full of ourselves thinking we can go out there and play and this was a long time coming,” Richards said. “We haven’t played that well over the first couple of games and relied heavily on our power play to win those.” Read the rest of this entry »
Flyers Game 2 Preview
Saturday’s game was a heartbreaker. They lost in overtime to the Bruins in Boston which makes game 2 that much more important. This is a must win because falling behind in a series 2-0 is hard to come back from.
There were some good and bad signs in the exciting game one. The first period and overtime were the bad signs. They were out played physically and in every statistical aspect of the game. In the overtime period, the Flyers were out-shot 15-4. You won’t win many overtime games giving up that many shots in less than 13 minutes.
They also made mistakes and didn’t capitalize on chances. For instance, Carcillo had a break away in overtime but wasn’t patient enough to get the puck past Rask. Read the rest of this entry »
A Sweep of the Devils?
If the Flyers win tonight it means they just beat one of the league’s best 2 times in 3 days. A home-and-home sweep of the division leading Devils would be a huge statement for the Flyers going into the last stretch of the regular season. But the Flyers can’t win tonight if they don’t play.
The weather is horrible along the east coast where it has been snowing since Tuesday night and will continue until late Wednesday. The roads are bad and many cities have declared weather emergencies. This could lead to the NHL postponing the game due to snow. As of right now, the game will be played but the NHL will make the final call.
If the game does get played, the Flyers need to take advantage of the opportunity to send a message. Read the rest of this entry »
Jeremy Roenick Retires
This is just a short tribute to Jeremy Roenick who played many successful years for the Philadelphia Flyers. Just the other day he retired after being in the NHL for twenty season, and I must say, he had a very very good career. With the Flyers from 2001-2005 Jeremy Roenick made an immediate impact his first year with the team earning the MVP and Class act awards. He had sixty-seven points that year and also got his one thousanth career point. He was the ultimate man of consistancy as his goals and points totals were all around the same with his years on the Flyers. He was a relentless player who played for the team.
He was known for speaking his mind and not caring about what people thought. In the lockout season, he told fans to “kiss his ass” for thinking that hockey players were spoiled. No matter what people say, Roenick’s controversy that surrounded him does not take away from what he did on the ice. You don’t last twenty years in the NHL if you are a poor player. He played well for a long time and he felt that it was his time to check out of the league. He ended his career with 513 goals, 703 assists, 1216 points, and a total of 1363 games played. Thank you Jeremy Roenick for giving the Flyers at least a couple of years out of your long successful career.
We Fly High… In the Offseason
The Flyers last season lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins who went on to eventually win the Stanley Cup. The previous year, the Flyers also lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. If the Flyers would happen to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in the playoffs this upcoming season and happen to lose to them, it would be the ultimate slap in the face. There is no arguing the strength and depth of the Flyers offense. They have three high powered lines that score at will. However this offseason, the Flyers went out and got two very key additions.
Defenseman Chris Pronger is a future hall of famer, but as of now, he is a Philadelphia Flyer. He is a tremendous player who plays at a level that is 5 years younger than his actual age (34). He tallied five more points (48) than Kimmo Timonen who had the most points as a defenseman on the Flyers (43). 48 points put him in the top 15 point scoring defensman in the league. The other key addition is goaltender Ray Emery. Formerly known as a trouble maker, he took a year off from the NHL to play in Russia. The Flyers are giving him another shot and hope that he can bring the city of Philadelphia Lord Stanley’s Cup just like he did for the Senators.
It is obvious that the Flyers this off season focused on strengthening their defense. Now, they hopefully have a clutch goaltender and a star player on the defensive side of the puck. They also added Brian Boucher who played previously on the Flyers. He will back up Ray. It will be an interesting season once it comes time for the players to step onto the ice. Here are some rankings according to ESPN.com. They have the Flyers at fourth in the East.
