Starting Pitching Is Key In The Playoffs

Each one of these possible starters has the chance of throwing great games. In the regular season rotation there were 2 former Cy Young winners, last years World Series MVP, the possible NL Rookie of the Year and Joe Blanton.  Now that rotation will be cut down and all we know so far is that Lee will pitch in game one and Hamels will take game two.

The way the starters perform will have a huge impact on this post season because teams need consistency in the rotation to go all the way. Last season, everyone from Hamels to Moyer stepped up in the playoffs and at least kept the majority of the games close. This season, the bullpen is hurting so it will be harder for other pitchers to bail them out if the starters can’t last deep into games. Moyer, Romero and  Park are all done for the year which hurts this team a lot (especially in the long relief category). They will need to be consistently good each game and I have faith that they can do it. Read the rest of this entry »

Playoff Preview

The first round of the playoffs starts on Wednesday and the Phillies are taking on the Colorado Rockies.  Just two years ago the Rockies swept the Phillies also in the first round of the playoffs, and as a result they went on to appear in the World Series.  That was then, and this is now.  We all know what the Phillies can do,  but what about the Rockies this year?  What type of team are they, and how do the Phillies match up against them?  Here is what I think.

The Rockies are a very well rounded team.  Statistically, both the Phillies and the Rockies are very close.  Their team batting averages are both around .260.  Their team ERA’s are comparable, with the Phillies ERA only .06 points lower.
