It’s been tough to watch the Phillies lately. They’re 2-6 in their last 8 games, in their last 6  losses they only mustered up 5 runs, we witnessed Halladay get shelled and they most recently got shut out by the METS…TWICE. They’ve also been outscored 26-3 during the recent 4 game slide. Read the rest of this entry »

Mets Whining Over Blue Jays Series

New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis is in disbelief after his eighth-inning hit - at least he thinks it's a hit - is ruled a foul ball and not a grand slam.

Yesterday the MLB announced that the Phillies and Blue Jays series, which was initially set to be played in Toronto from June 25-27, would be moved to Philadelphia due to possible security threats in Toronto. It was going to be a major series for the city of Torono because of the chance that Halladay could pitch against his old team. I support the move but Mets outfielder Jeff Francoeur is whining about it. Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies and Mets: Round 1

This weekend, the Mets come to town for the first matchup between the 2 rivals all season. The past week for the Phillies and Mets have been polar opposites but anything is possible in this series. It’s still early in the season but every Phillies/Mets matchup is important-especially when it’s a battle for first place. Read the rest of this entry »

The Phillies biggest New York Rival

Watch out Mets. The Yankees are challenging you as the Phillies biggest rival from the state of New York.

Last year, there was no heat between the usually hard fought Mets/Phillies rivalry. The Mets flat out sucked and the series’ weren’t even close to as electric as they had been the past few seasons.

Even though it’s still early, it doesn’t look like the Mets will be a real threat to take the NL this season either. Every year they’re uncompetitive, more excitement drains out of the rivalry which makes room for the Yankees to fill in as the Phillies biggest enemy. Read the rest of this entry »

Judging Pedro and Watching Werth

http://www.hotstovephilly.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/jaywerth.jpgThe Phillies have won all 3 games that Pedro Martinez has pitched in. His record is 2-0 and he just beat the Mets in New York. Looks great right? Not so fast… he has an era of 5.14 in those 3 starts and in the two starts that should really be counted (first and third) he only pitched 11 innings. He is also getting a lot more run support than the usual Phillies pitcher gets. In his 3 games, the Phillies have supported him with 26 runs.

I’m not saying he hasn’t earned his wins but he hasn’t been a huge improvement from Moyer so far. It’s still too early to tell but one or two more starts should give us a better comparison of Moyer and Pedro.  So far it seems like the move hasn’t made much of a difference. But hey, they are winning his games so I can’t complain.

One player that everyone knows deserves a spot in the line up is Jason Werth. It seems like he has been on fire all season long. I was happy with his numbers last year and was expecting more of the same this season but he has really impressed everyone by getting even better. He’s been one of the most surpisingly reliable players on the team with nearly everyone going through slumps but him. Keep it up Werth we need you to play like this to win another championship.

2 more things… the Phillies should win tomorrow with Lee on the mound against the Mets. He will shut them down. Also, just becasue I loved the fight, I have to mention how I enjoy seeing the passionate Phillies fans fighting in New York.

The Sunday Showdown- Pedro Returns to New York

http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/f/6/b/d/PHILLIES_PEDRO_MARTINEZ_c662.JPG?adImageId=2056862&imageId=5378564Pedro Martinez has only pitched in 2 games since joining the Phillies but he is already scheduled to pitch in what is probably the most important game of the season in his mind. Sunday at 1 pm, Pedro will take the mound against his former team, the New York Mets.

This is a huge chance for him to make a statement to the Mets and to the rest of the league. There are still many questions surrounding the signing. Was he worth it for the Phillies? Should he be a starter? Does he still have it? So far it’s too early to tell. He looked good but not great in his first start and his second outing was too short to tell. Over the next few games he will have to answer these questions with his pitching.

Because of this, Pedro’s going to be under a microscope for the rest of this season and there are people judging every pitch he makes. The Mets are most likely among the people doubting him. They parted ways with him after a few below average seasons and had to feel at that point that he had nothing left in the tank. Most of their fans and players wouldn’t want to see him win with the Phillies when he couldn’t with the Mets.

RIP New York Mets

In case anyone was still considering them as contenders in the NL East race, I want to officially announce the death of  New York Mets for the 2009 MLB season. In a very unfortunate accident, the Giants killed any remaining playoff hopes the team had with a blow to the head of All-Star David Wright. As much as I like seeing the Mets FAIL, I hate seeing players get taken out of games that way and I hope Wright recovers quickly and fully.

http://brooklynmetfan.com/images/uploads/Santa%20Met.jpgThat being said, it is a great feeling for Phillies fans. That pain in the ass team that has been talking trash on the Phillies and making poor attempts at winning the division for years, has finally been shut up. It was more fun watching the Mets collapses of the past 2 seasons than watching them lose because their 4 best players are injured. But it’s still nice seeing them hanging out in the basement with the Natinals. They are currently 11.5 games back from us and falling fast.
