Phillies Are The City’s Only Hope

AP Photo
The Eagles failed on us this year. We had high hopes for them going into the last week of the regular season and the playoffs but they completely fell apart and let us down. Now they’re sitting low in free agency and they don’t get another shot at the playoffs for about 10 months.
The Sixers seem to fail on us every year. They haven’t been out of the first round of the playoffs in 7 years and have had 6 different head coaches since 2003. This year they’re among the leagues worst Read the rest of this entry »
Flyers Game Tonight
I will be attending the Flyers game tonight in Philadelphia against the Atlanta Thrashers. The Thrashers have a very similar record to the Flyers. While they have three less wins, they have one less loss and five more overtime losses. When looking at the points, the Flyers have 55 and the Thrashers have 54. The Flyers are third in the Atlantic Division, and the Thrashers are third in the Southeast. However, in the Eastern Conference, the Flyers are sixth and the Thrashers are eleventh. While the teams Read the rest of this entry »
Michael Leighton… Flyers New Answer?
Even though the Flyers gave up 4 goals in last nights loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, that was Michael Leighton’s first loss in regulation in 11 straight starts for the team. Before last night he was 8-0-1, and letting up an average of 2.17 goals per game. He also has been saving basically 93% of shots with a .928 save percentage. In last nights game, the defense men are blaming no one but themselves. Chris Pronger stated that they gave them the game because of all of the turnovers. He also said that Toronto didn’t have to work for any of their goals. Laviolette said that Leighton Read the rest of this entry »
Flyers Make a Statement
It’s no secret that the Philadelphia Flyers season thus far has been a bit of a disappointment. Losing streaks, big losses, and a record that was far from satisfying all lead to the dismissal of head coach John Stevens. That brought in the new head coach Laviolette. However, his impact was small and the Flyers continued to lose games. The big picture though was the future of the team. In the long run, how would the change in coaching influence the play of a roster that has talent among talent. The Flyers obviously have all Read the rest of this entry »
The Best Gift A Philly Team Can Give Me This Holiday Season is ___.
Welcome to another installment of FILL IT IN. This one’s a Holiday edition. Here’s a few guidelines for answering this one. The “gift” from the Philadelphia sports team has to be “given” to you by the beginning of January (because that’s when the Holiday season ends). If you think hard about it, there’s plenty to wish for…Our opinion: A first round bye. There are a lot of different answers for this that we thought over (The Flyers are playing in the Winter Classic, the Sixers have an important road trip, Temple’s basketball team takes on the #1 team in the country, the Phillies could sign another free agent) but the best thing that could happen for us right now is for the Eagles to get an important first round bye in the playoffs.
Big Hit By Mike Richards (video)
Last night, the Flyers crushed the Panthers 5-1. They played a great game but the overshadowing story from the matchup was Mike Richards’ devastating hit on the unsuspecting David Booth. It was a gruesome hit that led to Booth getting carted off the ice. There is a backlash coming from fans and the media but what should have been done to Richards (if anything) as a result?
This is a difficult situation to judge. Mike Richards is by no means a dirty player. However, he is a physical one and likes to get that big hit. Hockey is a very fast paced sport and collisions like this happen whether they are intentional or not. When looking at the hit, Richards’ skates never leave the ice when going in for contact which plays a major role in his penalty. Read the rest of this entry »
Jeremy Roenick Retires
This is just a short tribute to Jeremy Roenick who played many successful years for the Philadelphia Flyers. Just the other day he retired after being in the NHL for twenty season, and I must say, he had a very very good career. With the Flyers from 2001-2005 Jeremy Roenick made an immediate impact his first year with the team earning the MVP and Class act awards. He had sixty-seven points that year and also got his one thousanth career point. He was the ultimate man of consistancy as his goals and points totals were all around the same with his years on the Flyers. He was a relentless player who played for the team.
He was known for speaking his mind and not caring about what people thought. In the lockout season, he told fans to “kiss his ass” for thinking that hockey players were spoiled. No matter what people say, Roenick’s controversy that surrounded him does not take away from what he did on the ice. You don’t last twenty years in the NHL if you are a poor player. He played well for a long time and he felt that it was his time to check out of the league. He ended his career with 513 goals, 703 assists, 1216 points, and a total of 1363 games played. Thank you Jeremy Roenick for giving the Flyers at least a couple of years out of your long successful career.
We Fly High… In the Offseason
The Flyers last season lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins who went on to eventually win the Stanley Cup. The previous year, the Flyers also lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. If the Flyers would happen to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in the playoffs this upcoming season and happen to lose to them, it would be the ultimate slap in the face. There is no arguing the strength and depth of the Flyers offense. They have three high powered lines that score at will. However this offseason, the Flyers went out and got two very key additions.
Defenseman Chris Pronger is a future hall of famer, but as of now, he is a Philadelphia Flyer. He is a tremendous player who plays at a level that is 5 years younger than his actual age (34). He tallied five more points (48) than Kimmo Timonen who had the most points as a defenseman on the Flyers (43). 48 points put him in the top 15 point scoring defensman in the league. The other key addition is goaltender Ray Emery. Formerly known as a trouble maker, he took a year off from the NHL to play in Russia. The Flyers are giving him another shot and hope that he can bring the city of Philadelphia Lord Stanley’s Cup just like he did for the Senators.
It is obvious that the Flyers this off season focused on strengthening their defense. Now, they hopefully have a clutch goaltender and a star player on the defensive side of the puck. They also added Brian Boucher who played previously on the Flyers. He will back up Ray. It will be an interesting season once it comes time for the players to step onto the ice. Here are some rankings according to ESPN.com. They have the Flyers at fourth in the East.
