For the Phillies, it Feels Like 2007

If it feels like 2007 to you too, that’s because that was the last time the Phillies were this far back in the division. With last night’s loss to the Braves, the Phillies fell to 6 games back- the furthest back they’ve been since September 2007. It’s not insurmountable but it’s not something this team is used to.

That stat explains how good they’ve been over the past 3 years but also how bad (and unlucky) they’ve been this season. I would have to say it’s been an even mix of bad luck and poor play.

Chase  Utley, Placido Polanco,  Carlos Ruiz, J.A. Happ, Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin, Antonio Bastardo, Jimmy Rollins, Joe Blanton, Brad Lidge, and Brian Schneider are all big time players that have seen the disabled list at least once this season so far. Read the rest of this entry »

Opening Day Preview

http://blogs.phillynews.com/inquirer/zozone/utley.jpgWith 2 days left until Phillies’ opening day, I thought I would take a look ahead at Monday’s game. It’s hard to predict baseball games between division rivals-especially early in the season- but we can look at the matchups and get ready for the big game.

The 1:00 game between the Phillies and Nationals in Washington will start off with President Obama throwing out the ceremonious first pitch. Read the rest of this entry »

A Look at the Phillies

The Phillies have been to the World Series two years in a row.  They won it all in 2008 and last year they came up short against the infamous New York Yankees.  This off season was long and a lot of things went on as far as rehab, acquisitions, and releases.  With Spring training coming to an end and opening day right around the corner, here is a look at the 2010 Philadelphia Phillies roster as of now.

The infield will look relatively the same except at the third base position.  Pedro Feliz was not resigned and instead, Placido Polanco returns for his second stay with the Phillies.  Last year he batted above .280 and hit ten home runs.  He also drove in 72 runs and stole seven bases.  During spring training Polanco Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies Players Split on Vick

http://blog.peta.org/archives/Michael_Vick_Protest_6.jpgJust like the rest of the city, the Philadelphia Phillies players seem to be split on the signing of Vick. At least a few of them.

Jimmy Rollins supports the Eagles signing of the former prisoner. He says, like many other fans, that people deserve second chances in life and Vick is no exception. A ton NFL players and coaches have been saying the same thing about him. What he did was wrong but he did his time and should get  chance to prove himself.

Chase Utley’s feelings on the issue are a lot harder to uncover. He hasn’t made any public announcement about his views on Vick yet and I don’t blame him at all. For most of his career he has been an advocate against animal cruelty. He sponsors events, pays for the recovery of abused animals, and raises tons of money for their protection. If you visit his website you can watch videos and read his comments on animal cruelty. It his something he feels strongly about.
