A Series of Familiar Faces
Any time the Phillies play the Astros there’s a good chance they’ll run into some familiar faces since Ed Wade scoops up nearly every player the Phils get rid of and most recently worked out a blockbuster trade between the two teams. So it wasn’t suprising to look at this week’s projected starters and see that half of the starting pitchers the Phils will go up against in the series were on their team last season.
The series starts off tonight with Brett Myers on the mound. It’s his first appearance in Philly since joining the Astros and it will be interesting to see how the fans greet the team’s former ace (my how things have changed…). Read the rest of this entry »
The Phillies Have Problems
It was the 6th inning of Saturday’s game and I started writing an article about how this game showed the Phillies at their best. It was a great one going into the 8th. It had everything- good starting pitching, good offense and a big comeback.
They started down by 4 right off the bat but Moyer got it together and recovered well. The offense didn’t let the 4 run deficit get to them as they scored the next 9 runs of the game with home runs, triples and good overall hitting. Then the 8th and 9th innings came around and I had to start my article over.
This is no longer the Phillies at their best. Now it has to be about the huge, obvious problems that are facing this team as the playoffs appraoch. All year long, the problem has been Brad Lidge. He blew 10 games and if the Phillies couldn’t find a replacement they would have no shot in the playoffs.
Sad Brad..
Brad Lidge was our savior last year. Without question he played one of the biggest roles on the team winning us games and helping the Phillies finish the year with a World Series title. He was undefeated and the best closer hands down in the league last year. Key words… last year. I’m not the type of guy to just abandon players, throw them under the bus, and leave them for dead. I support Brad Lidge. He’s not losing us games on purpose. However… he is losing us games. He is blowing save opportunities left and right and is now in serious trouble. His spot as the closer is in question.
In the beginning of the year when he was playing poorly, people wanted him out. I said, “Hey, give him a chance. He was amazing last year and to just bash him this early in the season is wrong.” At the allstar break, fans wanted him gone, but not me. I said, “Hey, he’ll come out of this slump. You can’t go from being amazing to just pitiful in one year.” Now, people are calling for his head. They want him out of the closer spot and Myers (or someone else) in. I’m sorry to say that I must now agree. I love Lidge, and I hope that this doesn’t effect his future with the team. However, enough is enough and the Phillies can’t lose games that they Read the rest of this entry »
Phillies Start Big Series and Myers Starts Rehab
So another weekend and another big series for the Phillies. It’s not hard to make the case for this series being the most important one of the season. In the past few weeks, they have been seeing their division lead dwindle down to 4.5 games. The Marlins are the closest to catching them but the Atlanta Braves are right behind them too (5 games back).
The question will be what Phillies team decides to show up. We could see the team that swept the Cubs with a combination of great hitting and pitching. Or we could see the team that got blown away by that team from Florida the series before. Division series are usually close and hard to predict but I am leaning towards the “good” Phillies showing up for this series.
