This Is The Week…

We’ve been waiting for months but I think it’s finally time for the Phillies to jump ahead of the Braves and take the division lead. And I think this is the week it’s going to happen- for good.

The Phillies have been awful during some stretches and amazing during others but they haven’t had the division lead in months. Throughout all of their injuries and losing streaks however, they managed to stay close to the Braves. Now they are only .5 games back with a stretch of sub-par challengers over the next month.

This week, they have 2 against the Marlins in which they will be facing Volstad and Andrew Miller who each have a poor history against the Phils. After that, they travel to New York to take on the Mets who are 12 games out of the division and have a 3-7 record in their last 10. Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies Take NL Wild Card Lead

After a good showing this weekend against the Mets, the Phillies find themselves atop the NL wild card standings but are virtually tied with the San Francisco Giants- who they happen to play this week.

The Phillies took their series with the Mets 2 games to 1 but it didn’ t help them gain any ground on the Braves. Atlanta also took 2 games from the Dodgers and are still leading the division by 2 games over the Phils. The Braves finish their series with LA tonight and then get the Nationals for 3.

The fact that Atlanta plays one of the NLs worst teams Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies Weekend Preview: @Mets

Shane Victorino grand slam

Hopefully Victorino is hot in his first full series since returning from his injury.

Coming off one of the most exciting games of the season (2nd to Halladay’s perfect game on my birthday), the Phillies travel down the road to New York to visit the 3rd place Mets.

They’re only about 5 days removed from their last series with the Mets in Philly. They took that series 2 games to 1 and really hurt the Mets chances at making a playoff push. A sweep this weekend will all but knock them out for good- how awesome would that be? Here’s a quick breakdown of this weekend’s games. Unfortunately, we don’t know much about who the Mets will send to the mound. Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies Weekend Preview

Roy Oswalt Wow it’s really the weekend again? Well another weekend, another series for the Phillies. Tonight they open one against the Nationals in the nation’s capital and I don’t think there’s any reason they can’t stretch the curren winning streak to 11 games.

Since we did our weekend preview last week, the Phillies have been on a tear. On their current winning streak, the team ERA is under 2.0 and they have outscored the opposition 46-17. That’s incredible. The even better part is they’ve climbed back from 7 games behind the Braves to only 2.5. Here’s a preview of their next 3 games.

Friday: Roy Oswalt (0-0, 0.0) vs Craig Stammen (2-4, 5.50)

Technically those are Oswalt’s numbers because he’ll be making his debut for the Phillies tonight. Read the rest of this entry »

WOW! A 4 Game Winning Streak!

ST. LOUIS - JULY 22: Jayson Werth #28 of the Philadelphia Phillies shows the ball after making a sliding catch against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on July 22, 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri. The Phillies defeated the Cardinals 2-0. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)And with that, the Phillies are only FIVE games out of first place.

As soon as their 4 game losing streak ended, they responded with a 4 game winning streak and an offensive explosion- and it’s not over yet. During the losing streak they averaged 3 runs per game and during the current winning streak they’re averaging nearly 6. Read the rest of this entry »
