Remember This? 2 Years Ago Today…

In 2008, Brad Lidge engraved himself into the Phillies record books by having a perfect season. It included 41 saves in 41 chances, a 2-0 record and a 1.95 era.

Lidge wasn’t so perfect in the All-Star game though and on July 15th, 2008, he lost the game for the National League Read the rest of this entry »

Analyzing the Bullpen Troubles

“Phillies bullpen melts down again in loss to Braves”

“Phillies bullpen implodes in loss to Nationals”

Those are just a few of the recent news headlines about the current state of the Phillies bullpen. I’m sure I didn’t need to remind you of those headlines either. Every Phillies fan remembers the recent games where the starting pitchers threw gems and the releivers handed it over to the other team. Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies Add Bullpen Help

Last season the bullpen for the Philadelphia Phillies had their ups and downs.  Chan Ho Park added consistency.  Brad Lidge was not himself.  Ryan Madson strived in the 8th inning, but couldn’t find his groove in the ninth as the closer.  The Phillies needed to add another piece to the puzzle and with that being said the have inked relief pitcher Danys Baez.  The 32 year old right handed pitcher has agreed to a two year contract.  Pending Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies’ Team Awards

http://phourforphour.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/happ.jpgMajor League baseball will be announcing their awards shortly. Everything from rookie of the year, coach of the year and league MVPs will be delegated out to America’s best. In my opinion, there should be some Phillies’ winning those awards but we’ll see. To have some fun with it, here’s how we would give out the Phillies’ team awards (some real, some made up):

Rookie Of The Year: J.A. Happ

That was a tough one. The guy was incredible this season and I wish we saw more of him in the playoffs. There wasn’t even any competition in this decision and not only is he the Phillies’ ROY, but he better get the MLB ROY award as well. It’s hard to find someone in baseball who did more for their team- especially for a winning team. His record ended at 12-4 and his ERA was an incredible 2.93. Give the guy the award MLB.

Biggest Disappointment: Brad Lidge

This was a close one between two players. You guessed it… Read the rest of this entry »

Sad Brad..

Brad Lidge was our savior last year.  Without question he played one of the biggest roles on the team winning us games and helping the Phillies finish the year with a World Series title.  He was undefeated and the best closer hands down in the league last year.  Key words… last year.  I’m not the type of guy to just abandon players, throw them under the bus, and leave them for dead.  I support Brad Lidge.  He’s not losing us games on purpose.  However… he is losing us games.  He is blowing save opportunities left and right and is now in serious trouble.  His spot as the closer is in question.

In the beginning of the year when he was playing poorly, people wanted him out.  I said, “Hey, give him a chance.  He was amazing last year and to just bash him this early in the season is wrong.”  At the allstar break, fans wanted him gone, but not me.  I said, “Hey, he’ll come out of this slump.  You can’t go from being amazing to just pitiful in one year.”  Now, people are calling for his head.  They want him out of the closer spot and Myers (or someone else) in.  I’m sorry to say that I must now agree.  I love Lidge, and I hope that this doesn’t effect his future with the team.  However, enough is enough and the Phillies can’t lose games that they Read the rest of this entry »

The Phillies’ Hopes of Repeating Depend Mostly on _______.

Pitcher J. A. Happ of the Philadelphia Phillies throws in relief against the Toronto Blue Jays February 26, 2009 at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Florida. The Phillies players, coaches and fans all have high hopes for this team. Even though things have changed since last season within their organization and other teams around the league have gotten better, anything less than another title would be a disappointment to many people. One of the few things that could possibly stand in their way of this is something going wrong with the Phillies internally.  A lot of essential pieces of the team must work together and make as few mistakes as possible during the month of October if they want to accomplish this rare task of repeating as champs. The question we are asking you is what is the thing their changes depend most on.

The Phillies’ Hopes of Repeating Depend Mostly on _____.

Our Opinion: Their Pitching. There are plenty of things you can fill into this spot like their bats, Ryan Howard, the competition, ect. But we think the key piece to them winning will be the performance of their pitchers. We say this with a few people in mind…

What We Need for a Repeat

So the Phillies are playing well and I know I’m not the only fan that is looking for the team to make another W.S. run and defend the title.  I don’t like to talk to far ahead, but I thought it would be cool to narrow down a list of things that the team needs to do in order to keep the title of World “Bleepin” Champs.  So here is what I see as the vital signs of a repeat:

  1. Brad Lidge needs to return to his “perfect” self.
  2. Jimmy Rollins continues to play like the leader of the team making plays both offensively and defensively.
  3. Ryan Howard needs to stop stiking out… just kidding
  4. JA Happ needs go into the playoffs and pitch like hes been there before.
  5. Chan Ho must stay settled in as a great bullpen pitcher
  6. The bench players and situational starters need to be clutch down the stretch (Stairs, Bruntlett, Dobbs, etc.)
  7. Jamie Moyer needs to pitch like hes 45 years old.
  8. Offense needs to hit other teams Ace’s…cough cough Tim Lincicum
  9. The new additions need to contribute and do what the orginaztion brought them in to do…especially Lee.
  10. Finally, the fans need to act like we are the best fans in the MLB… cuz we are.
