It Was Fun While It Lasted
So the Sixers announced today that Iverson’s year with the team was over. Unfortunately, it ended in a way nobody wanted it to- with his young daughter having a health issue serious enough to keep him away from the game. I’m not a parent but I can imagine that he must be going through some serious stuff right now and I wish his family the best.
The 25 game rental of Allen Iverson was fun while it lasted. He put some extra people in the seats, got the Sixers their first All-Star in a while and brought back memories from when this team had heart. Sure the team got heat from some of their fans and other sports analysts for picking him up but who can blame them? So what if they wanted to fill some seats? Its a business and this team obviously isn’t exciting or good enough to bring people out on their own.
The move didn’t hurt them as a team either. Even though his numbers were down from his last stint with the Sixers (13.9 ppg avg.), he added something that was missing especially when Lou Williams was down for a while.
Now, if for some reason they decide to bring him back next season (you never know with Stafanski), I would have to say that’s not the best idea for the team but this year I was fine with the move and I was glad AI was a Sixer again. I hope he retires right where he started his great career- in Philly.
