Phils’ Best Offseason Move was ___.
We’re back with another installment of “Fill It In” where we give you a sentence and ask your opinion. The Phillies have made a ton of moves so far this offeason. Amarro and the rest of the management have been busy. These moves range from little ones like signing minor leaguers, to big ones like trading 1 Cy Young winner for another and bringing back Placido Polanco for 3rd base. The offseason isn’t over yet but Think over everything they have done so far and complete this sentence:
The Phillies best 0ffseason move so far was ________.
Our Opinion: Locking up 2 key pieces of the championship team- Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz. Any Phillies fan realizes that these were great moves. The reason we picked this over the deal for Roy Halladay was because they already had a Cy Young winner before the trade so without that move they still would have been ok for a bit. If they didn’t lock up Victorino and Ruiz for 3 more years however, this might have been one of their last years as Phillies.
These guys are as good as it gets-especially for this Phillies team and their tight budget. Victorino is an all-star center fielder and a great top of the rotation hitter. Carlos Ruiz is arguably the best defensive catcher in baseball and puts up amazing numbers in the playoffs when his bat matters most. If they failed to sign these guys now, it would have been a lot harder to do so down the road. They would be getting attention from almost every team in baseball as free agents and who knows what kind of offers the Phillies would have had to match. The stability these 2 players give us at their positions for the next 3 years is priceless.
