The Phillies’ Biggest Offseason Need Is ______.

joe-blanton.jpegThe Phillies did well this year and were 2 wins away from repeating as champions. We don’t have much to complain about but we all know that Amaro and the rest of the Phillies’ management will be looking at ways to improve this team for next season. Even the slightest changes will make a difference because a few things were missing between the team that won in 2008 and the team that came so close in 2009.

The Phillies have a powerful offense and the core of their starting rotation is as solid as any team’s. To me, a few noticeable areas that need work include the back end of the starting rotation, the closer’s role, and the bench. It was hard to pick one but here’s our answer to this week’s FILL IT IN question.

Our Opinion: A new, right handed starter. According to the Phillies website, much of the starting rotation they have now will be around next year. Most likely Pedro and Brett Myers will end up on different teams which leaves one hole that Phillies.com says will be filled by Jamie Moyer at this point. For some reason that lineup doesn’t cut it for me. Since they need a long relief pitcher in their bullpen, going out and finding a new, consistant, RIGHT HANDED starting pitcher would perfect the rotation and help with the bullpen at the same time. You could keep Moyer in the pen as long relief where he succeeded at the end of this season. Then adding another reliable righty would provide a more even balance to the lefty-dominated rotation.

Let’s face it, the shaky starting pitching in the playoffs was tough to watch and the only player you wanted out there was Cliff Lee. Another ace would cost too much and not be worth it but another solid- Blanton/Happ type performer would be ideal.

Now you heard our opinion so what do you think their biggest off season need is?
