So Much For AI’s Return to Philly…
I bought my ticket to Friday’s game between the Sixers and the Grizzlies because it was hailed as “Allen Iverson’s return to Philly”. Who wouldn’t want to go to that game? It doesn’t matter if you don’t like the Sixers right now or if your not happy with the way they are playing. This was the return of Allen Iverson- the greatest basketball player to come through this city in the past 15 years.
When I heard the news a few weeks ago that he parted ways with Memphis, it was a downer. Now I’m just going to the game to watch the Sixers play the Grizzlies- what’s cool about that? Don’t get me wrong, I like going to Sixers games, but him leaving takes a lot away from it.
It’s a shame watching this happen to AI’s. He was so great in Philly and when he left, he was still good on the Nuggets. Along the way he got older and now he’s bouncing around the league like a pinball. The only thing you can hope to happen to a great player who you cheered for for so many years is for him to leave the league on top. It’s a rare thing to see in sports these days but anything is better than watching your favorite players suffer a long, painful deaths.
The news going around the league now is that the Knicks may be looking at Iverson. He could be a good fit there because the Knicks can’t get much worse and maybe he could get the playing times he wants (and deserves). If that day comes, there will be an Iverson return to Philly this season. But until then we can only sit and remember the days when he played in Philly.
