Vick Upgraded…Hank Hosed…
About two weeks ago, the Eagles roster needed to be trimmed down to fifty-three players. Due to that, Michael Vick was forced to be put on the excempt list. At that point in time it was no big deal because he was ineligable for another three weeks. Out of the fifty-three players, the Eagles kept a total of seven wide recievers on the team. SEVEN??? That is an absurd amount. The ideal number for the average team is about five. I guess it is a good problem to have when the competition to make the team was that close.
However, the concept of keeping seven of those wr’s for the whole season soon came to an end. Michael Vick has been promoted to the official 53 man roster. As a result, good ole’ Hank Baskett got the hose. The Eagles have officially released Hank Baskett. I feel that the Eagles needed some extra time to let the position battling at WR play out a little more. From the time that the official 53 man roster needed to be in until when the released Baskett, I have a feeling Baskett, Brown, and Gibson were all fighting in order to stay on the team. They knew that Vick was going to be activated and in order for that to happen, a player needed to be released. Baskett lost the compitition. The question is why? Maybe he wasn’t having good practices. Maybe they felt he wasn’t as valuable on special teams as other players. I do know that Gibson has a lot more upside, and Brown did have a great training camp.
I loved Hank Baskett when he was on the team. He had some good plays for the Eagles in his stay. In three years he was as productive as any bench WR could be. Racking up over 1000 yards receiving and six touchdowns. He averaged nearly 15 yards per catch. He was always a team player and did his job while he was on the field. Best of luck to him and I hope that he has no trouble finding another spot on a different team. With that being said… let the Michael Vick saga continue…
