Breaking Down Vick’s Play

MichaelVick-Eagles-1.jpg image by SD44_photosSo I watched Vick last night.  I was impressed.  He did a lot of things right and nothing wrong really.  I mean he only saw limited action but within that time frame, he was poised, calm, and relaxed.  For a player that has been out of the league for two years, staying focused like that is very hard to do.  He really looked like he wasn’t out of the league at all.  I want to talk about a few specific plays.

His first shovel pass:  This play may look simple to the eye.  However, timing is key on this play and remaining poised is essential.  Vick executed perfectly.  He drew in the defender and dished the ball off at the right moment and got a nice gain of yardage.  This will be a solid play for throughout the whole season.

His swing pass to Jackson:  While this did not get the Eagles yards, Vick did his job.  This was a designed play, Vick had good form, and he opened up perfectly to deliver an accurate pass to DeSean.  The problem was the blocking on the play.

His pass to Baskett:  After seeing this pass from Michael Vick, it answered about 3 major questions that I had about his gameplay.  Could he read a defense? Yes.  He broke down the coverage, checked his first and second option, and found Baskett.  Could he deliver an accurate pass in coverage? Yes.  He threw the strike to Baskett in the ideal location.  The ball just zipped off of his hand.  Could he stand in the pocket and feel comfortable.  Yes.  Vick remained poised in the pocket.  There was tremendous blocking on the play that gave Michael a lot of time to make the throw.  However, he looked confident.
